Abraxis BioScience to present updated survival findings from ABRAXANE Phase I/II trial at 101st AACR meeting

Abraxis BioScience, Inc., a fully integrated biotechnology company, announced that the updated survival findings from a Phase I/II clinical trial evaluating the chemotherapy agent ABRAXANE® for Injectable Suspension (paclitaxel protein-bound particles for injectable suspension) (albumin-bound) in combination with gemcitabine for first-line treatment of patients with metastatic pancreatic cancer will be discussed during a keynote address on April 20 at the 101st Annual Meeting of the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) being held in Washington, D.C.

Martina undergoing therapy for breast cancer, urges women to be more vigilant

The tennis legend Martina Navratilova has revealed on Wednesday that she is undergoing therapy for breast cancer. She has always been revered for her health and performance. Just a month short of her 50th birthday, Navratilova won her last grand slam title, the mixed doubles at the 2006 US Open, and in retirement she wrote a 'how-to' book about good living. She was a winner of a record nine Wimbledon singles titles, 59 grand slam titles, including 18 singles trophies and arguably the greatest female athlete of all time.

Study finds link between BRCA mutations and contralateral breast cancer

Women with breast cancer before age 55 who carry an inherited mutation in the breast cancer susceptibility genes BRCA1 or BRCA2 are four times more likely to develop cancer in the breast opposite, or contralateral, to their initial tumor as compared to breast cancer patients without these genetic defects.

Childhood cancer survivors may not survive long says new study

Children who have survived a cancer are at a higher risk of an early death says two new studies. The first report published in the April 6th issue of the Annals of Internal Medicine, said that there was a cumulative effect of the disease, a childhood cancer and its treatment on the risk of death in 15 year old patients who have been cancer free for at least 5 years.

Occupational exposure to synthetic fibers – a possible link with breast cancer

According to a recent report published in Occupational and Environmental Medicine, scientists have found that women during her mid 30's exposed to petrol products and synthetic fibers could treble the risk of developing breast cancer after menopause. According to the report, "Occupational exposure to nylon and acrylic fibers as well as to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons has higher risk of developing postmenopausal breast cancer."

Researchers at Mount Sinai School of Medicine have found that exposure to three common chemical classes-phenols, phthalates and phytoestrogens-in young girls may disrupt the timing of pubertal development, and put girls at risk for health complications later in life.
