Quitting smoking doubles survival chances in lung cancer patients

People diagnosed with early stage lung cancer can double their chances of survival over five years if they stop smoking compared with those who continue to smoke, finds a study published on bmj.com today.

Teva Pharmaceutical Industries receives FDA tentative approval for generic Femara Tablets

Teva Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd. announced today that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has granted tentative approval for the Company's Abbreviated New Drug Application (ANDA) to market its generic version of Novartis’ breast cancer treatment Femara® (letrozole) Tablets, 2.5 mg. Final approval of Teva’s Letrozole Tablets is expected upon expiry of patent protection for the brand product in June 2011.

Data demonstrates overall radiation with digital mammography is less than film mammography

Data from one of the largest mammography trials in history demonstrates that overall the radiation dose associated with digital mammography is significantly lower (averaging 22 percent lower) than that of conventional film mammography and that the reduction could be greater in women with larger and denser breasts, according to a study published in the February issue of the American Journal of Roentgenology.

Genomic Health announces global commercial availability of its Oncotype DX colon cancer test

Genomic Health, Inc. today announced worldwide commercial availability of its Oncotype DX® colon cancer test, the first multigene expression test developed for the assessment of risk of recurrence in patients with stage II disease. The 12-gene advanced diagnostic test is clinically validated to predict individual recurrence risk in stage II colon cancer patients following surgery, as reported at the 2009 American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) meeting.

Sagent Pharmaceuticals, Inc., a privately held specialty pharmaceutical company, today announced that it has launched pamidronate disodium injection in single-dose vials containing 30 mg per 10 mL and 90 mg per 10 mL. Pamidronate disodium injection, the generic alternative of Novartis Pharmaceutical Company's Aredia®, is a bone resorption inhibitor. The 2008 U.S. market for pamidronate disodium approximated $17 million, according to IMS data.
