Stroke drug kills cancer cells and leaves normal cells intact, report researchers

A never-approved drug developed to prevent the death of nerve cells after a stroke can efficiently kill cancer cells while keeping normal cells healthy and intact, an international team led by a Tel Aviv University researcher is reporting in the journal Breast Cancer Research.

Fulvestrant 500 mg reduces risk of disease progression in women with metastatic breast cancer

AstraZeneca (NYSE: AZN) today announced that data from a Phase III study of postmenopausal women with hormone receptor-positive advanced breast cancer presented at the San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium (Abstract 25) showed treatment with fulvestrant (FASLODEX) 500 mg reduced the risk of disease progression (assessed as time to progression (TTP)) by 20%

Soyfood consumption linked to decreased risk of breast cancer, finds study

A major new study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) finds that women with breast cancer would be well-served by including soyfoods in their daily diet. Soyfood consumption was significantly linked to a decreased risk of death and cancer recurrence among the breast cancer patients in this study.

Moderate consumption of alcoholic beverages increases the risk of breast cancer recurrence

Moderate consumption of alcoholic beverages (at least three to four drinks per week, no matter the type of alcohol) is associated with a 30 percent increased risk of breast cancer recurrence, according to a new Kaiser Permanente study. Post-menopausal or overweight women may be most susceptible to the effects of alcohol on recurrence, according to the researchers.

Merck commences Stimuvax Phase 3 trial in Asian patients with NSCLC

Oncothyreon Inc. today announced that Merck KGaA of Darmstadt, Germany, has initiated a Phase 3 trial of Stimuvax(R) (BLP25 liposome vaccine) in Asian patients with advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). The trial, named INSPIRE (Stimuvax trial In Asian NSCLC Patients: Stimulating Immune Response), is anticipated to enroll approximately 420 patients in China, Hong Kong, South Korea, Singapore and Taiwan.

Roche to present data on its Herceptin, Avastin and T-DM1 studies at CTRC-AACR Symposium

Roche announced today that new 5 year follow-up data from two pivotal studies with Herceptin(R) (trastuzumab) in early breast cancer; key results from a study of Avastin(R) (bevacizumab) in the second-line treatment of advanced breast cancer and strong data on the use of trastuzumab-DM1 (T-DM1), the first antibody-drug conjugate in development for very advanced HER2-positive breast cancer, will all be presented during the CTRC-AACR San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium (SABCS) from 9 to 13 December 2009.

The language in our amendment is completely consistent with the Hyde Amendment, which in the 33 years since its passage has done nothing to inhibit private health insurers from offering abortion coverage. There is no reason to believe that a continuation of this policy would suddenly create undue hardship for the insurance industry — or for those who wish to use their private insurance to pay for an abortion (Rep. Bart Stupak, 12/8).
