Heart patients living with children exercise less: Study

A study conducted at the Montreal Heart Institute (MHI) has shown unexpectedly that living with children is linked to a reduction in physical activity. Carried out with 756 participants and led by Dr. Simon L. Bacon, Associate Researcher at the MHI and Professor at Concordia University, the study assessed the impact of social networks on exercise, revealing that people with heart disease who live with children exercise less than those people who do not live with children.

New microbicide gel reduces woman's risk of being infected with HIV, genital herpes

Today at the XVIII International AIDS Conference in Vienna, Austria, members of the International Rectal Microbicide Advocates (IRMA) and thousands of other HIV advocates and scientists cheered a long-awaited, much anticipated success in the quest for new HIV prevention technologies. Brain cancer survivor completes journey across America to raise awareness, money for brain cancer research

Anne Feeley, a 56-year-old mother and brain cancer survivor, completed her journey across America today, cycling 3,708 miles, to raise awareness and money for brain cancer research and patient care. Feeley pedaled the last 6.5 miles of her journey from Hains Point, VA to cross the finish line at the Capital Reflecting Pool in Washington, DC.

Cangene eliminated from ARS contract

Aetna announced today it will support Judge Glenda Hatchett's ParentPowerNow! anti-obesity program. "Parent Power Now!" is an online community of people interested in working together and learning more about parenting. Aetna has awarded a $75,000 grant and will provide health content for the ParentPowerNow! website, guest speakers to address healthy living on Judge Hatchett's live website radio program, and support for health events scheduled around the country.

Millipore Corporation exchanges common stock with Merck

Millipore Corporation, a leading provider of technologies, tools and services for the global life science industry, today announced that Merck KGaA ("Merck") has completed its acquisition of Millipore (the "Acquisition") as of July 14, 2010. As part of the transaction, all issued and outstanding shares of Millipore common stock were exchanged for $107 per share in cash.

FDA confirms GRAS status for Ajinomoto's AjiGRAS-Leucine

Ajinomoto AminoScience LLC (AAS) today announced that it has confirmed GRAS (Generally Recognized As Safe) status of its AjiGRAS-Leucine, meeting the safety standards demanded by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). As the only formulation of Leucine currently with FDA acknowledged GRAS status, Ajinomoto's AjiGRAS-Leucine is the first amino acid to be allowed as an ingredient for use in conventional foods like non-milk and milk based meal replacements, sports and isotonic beverages, vitamin enhanced waters, and meal replacement bars, at levels of 0.5 to 3 grams per serving.
