Experts call on international community to commit attention and resources to cervical cancer prevention

Women's health leaders today called on the international community to commit the resources needed to ensure that women and girls worldwide have equal access to cervical cancer prevention technologies. At the WOMEN DELIVER conference, the Declaration for Universal Access to Cervical Cancer Prevention was issued by leading women's health, cancer and business organizations, including PATH, the International Planned Parenthood Federation and the International Union Against Cancer.

White paper advocates strategies to reduce barriers to HPV vaccination, cervical cancer prevention

The Society of Gynecologic Oncologists has published its third in a series of four papers on a variety of cervical cancer issues and topics featured at "The Future Strategies for Cervical Cancer Prevention: What Do We Need to Do Now to Prepare" Forum. The paper, entitled "Can the Barriers to HPV Vaccination in High-Risk Populations be Overcome?" appears in the June, 2010 issue of Gynecologic Oncology Journal.

Phase 3 clinical study: Ipilimumab boosts, sustains immune system responses against melanoma tumors

The Cancer Research Institute, a nonprofit organization dedicated to the development of immune system-based treatments for cancer, announced today its celebration of a significant new breakthrough in the treatment of melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer. The new treatment, a cancer immunotherapy created by Cancer Research Institute Scientific Advisory Council Associate Director James P. Allison, Ph.D., is designed to "take the brakes off the immune system," and is the first treatment ever proven to extend life for patients whose melanomas are unresponsive to existing cancer therapies.

Lytix Biopharma, KAEL-GemVax granted approval for GV1001/LTX-315 combination cancer therapy study

The Norwegian biopharmaceutical company Lytix Biopharma and Korean company KAEL-GemVax today announced approval by the Norwegian Medicines Agency ('Statens Legemiddelverk') to test a combination of LTX-315 and GV1001 as vaccine therapy in patients with resected tumours. Lytix Biopharma CEO Gunnar Salid states, "We are delighted to announce the approval of our joint study to test a combination of two very interesting experimental drugs.

Gates Foundation announces 5-year, $1.5 billion commitment for maternal, child health

During the Women Deliver conference on Monday Melinda Gates announced that the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation "will spend $1.5 billion over the next five years on maternal and child health, family planning and nutrition in developing countries, a pledge that signals a new focus for the foundation known for concentrating on vaccines and AIDS," the Wall Street Journal reports (Jordan, 6/7).

HPV-positive tumor status is strong prognostic factor for head, neck cancer

Oropharyngeal cancer patients whose tumors in the upper part of the throat test positively for the human papillomavirus (HPV) have better overall survival than patients with HPV-negative disease, researchers from The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center report in a study published in The New England Journal of Medicine.

Health Canada approves Novartis' Menveo for prevention of meningococcal disease

Novartis Pharmaceutical Canada Inc. announced that Menveo (Meningococcal (Groups A, C, Y and W-135) Oligosaccharide CRM197 Conjugate Vaccine), a quadrivalent meningococcal conjugate vaccine was approved by Health Canada for active immunization of adolescents (11 to 18 years of age) and adults (19 to 55 years of age) to prevent invasive meningococcal disease caused by Neisseria meningitidis serogroups A, C, Y and W-135.

Idera reports preliminary results from IMO-3100 Phase 1 clinical trial for autoimmune, inflammatory diseases

Idera Pharmaceuticals, Inc. today announced preliminary results from a Phase 1 clinical trial of IMO-3100, its lead Toll-like Receptor (TLR) 7 and TLR9 antagonist drug candidate for potential applications in autoimmune and inflammatory diseases. In this trial, healthy subjects in five dosage cohorts received single doses of IMO-3100 from 0.04 to 0.64 mg/kg. IMO-3100 was well tolerated at all dose levels.

BioSante Pharmaceuticals, Inc. today announced the receipt of Orphan Drug designation for GVAX CML Vaccine in the treatment of chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) from the FDA's Office of Orphan Products Development. Orphan drug designation, as granted by the U.S. Orphan Drug Act, is for a product to treat a rare disease or condition that affects fewer than 200,000 people in the U.S. Orphan drug designation qualifies the sponsor of the product for tax credits and seven years of marketing exclusivity, among other benefits.

NewLink Genetics reports positive data from Phase 2 trial of HyperAcute-Pancreas cancer immunotherapy

NewLink Genetics Corporation today announced positive Phase 2 clinical trial data of its HyperAcute®-Pancreas cancer immunotherapy combined with standard adjuvant chemotherapy in patients with surgically resectable pancreatic cancer. The study results suggest a potentially longer disease-free survival and one-year overall survival in this patient group than reported in previous studies of surgery and adjuvant therapy alone. These data were presented in a poster session at the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) annual meeting.
